Just Watched: Rakht Charitra
Ram Gopal Varma has always been amongst my favourite directors in India, and I’ve always felt that he is someone who is very underrated, so much so that he started making rather uninspiring films.
With this film, he proves that he is still the capable filmmaker which he use to be once. While I do admit that it isn’t really a fantastic work, the film, at its heart, is something raw, and appealing, despite the insane amount of violence depicted in it.
Based on the life of Andhra gangster-politician Paritala Ravi, this film is something that needs to be experienced by every RGV fan who thought that a comeback was unlikely. Here he sticks to what he does best, mixing politics and crime.
Whil the first half was extremely slow, the post-interval part was exceptional. Vivek Oberoi is superb in his role as Pratap Ravi. He really needs to give more performances like this to prove a point. Shatrughan Sinha is amazing as Sivaji Rao. The powerhouse performer, however, is Abhimanyu Singh, who plays the evil Bukka Reddy. He was so good, that even the thought of that character makes me cringe. One major problem was the bad narration throughout. It made the viewing experience a little disappointing, but it was still worth it at the end of the day, I guess.
Let’s see what the sequel, Rakht Charitra 2 has in store.
Welcome back RGV, you’ve been missed.
